โค๏ธ Health โ Check your percentile โThe Reality of Being 35
The financial advice industry loves to tell 35-year-olds they should have "1-2x their salary saved for retirement." The reality: the median 401(k) balance for 35-44-year-olds is approximately $60,000 (Vanguard, 2023). The average is higher at $141,000 โ but that's skewed by high earners. Most people are nowhere near the "recommended" targets.
Homeownership is getting later: the median first-time buyer age reached 36 in 2023, up from 29 in 1981 (National Association of Realtors). If you don't own a home at 35, you're now in the statistical majority of your cohort.
The "having it all" myth hits hardest in the mid-thirties. Research by Herminia Ibarra (London Business School) shows that 35-40 is the peak age for career identity crises โ professionals questioning whether they chose the right path. This is normal, not a failure.
Physically, your body is changing. Basal metabolic rate drops ~2-4% per decade starting around 30 (Pontzer et al., 2021). Muscle mass decreases 3-8% per decade without resistance training. The fitness standards that felt easy at 25 require more deliberate effort. This isn't you "letting yourself go" โ it's biology.
