Understanding narcissism

Narcissism exists on a spectrum. Some narcissistic traits (confidence, ambition) are healthy and adaptive. The clinical diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) affects only 1-6% of the population.

NPI score categories

  • 10-20: Low narcissism — humble, possibly too self-critical
  • 21-28: Average — healthy self-confidence
  • 29-35: Above average — strong ego, natural leader
  • 36-45: High narcissism — may cause relationship issues
  • 46-50: Very high — consider professional reflection

Narcissism facts

  • CEOs score 30% higher than average on narcissism (Chatterjee & Hambrick)
  • Social media use correlates with higher narcissism (r=0.25)
  • Narcissism has increased 30% among college students since 1979 (Twenge et al.)
  • Healthy narcissism is a thing — it drives ambition and resilience
