  • Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80 mmHg
  • High Blood Pressure Stage 1: 130–139 / 80–89 mmHg
  • High Blood Pressure Stage 2: 140+ / 90+ mmHg
  • Hypertensive Crisis: Higher than 180/120 mmHg — seek immediate medical attention

Average blood pressure by age (NHANES data)

  • 18–39: Average 114/71 mmHg — about 26% have elevated or higher
  • 40–59: Average 124/77 mmHg — about 44% have elevated or higher
  • 60+: Average 136/69 mmHg — about 63% have elevated or higher

Why blood pressure matters

High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because it often has no symptoms until serious damage is done. It's the #1 risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease, kidney disease, and dementia.
