What is "The Ick"?

"The ick" is a sudden feeling of disgust or cringe toward someone you were previously attracted to. A 2023 Hinge study found 73% of daters have experienced the ick, and most people have given it to someone else without knowing.

Three categories of ick behaviors

  • Social icks (items 1-3): Table manners, self-centeredness, and phone addiction — the most universally cringeworthy
  • Personal icks (items 4-7): Social blindness, oversharing, self-amusement, and hygiene gaps
  • Dating icks (items 8-10): Ex-talk, rudeness to staff (the #1 deal-breaker), and one-upping

Population norms

  • Average score: 26/50 — everyone has at least a couple ick-worthy habits
  • Maximum ick (top 15%): Score 36+ out of 50
  • Zero ick (bottom 15%): Below 16 — exceptional social awareness
  • Most people are unaware of their own ick-giving behaviors — that's what makes this test useful

Note: The ick is subjective — what repels one person might not bother another. This measures common ick triggers.
