What is the NPC Test?

NPC (Non-Player Character) is internet slang for someone who appears to live on autopilot — following routines, echoing popular opinions, and lacking original thoughts. The meme went viral in 2023, but the underlying concept has roots in psychology.

Three dimensions of "NPC behavior"

  • Autopilot (items 1-3): Routine-dependence and resistance to novelty — linked to low openness to experience (Big Five)
  • Conformity (items 4-7): Going along with the group — Asch conformity experiments showed 75% of people conform at least once
  • Awareness (items 8-10): Mindless scrolling, unexamined habits, and lack of self-reflection

Population norms

  • Average score: 28/50 — most people have some NPC tendencies
  • Full NPC (top 15%): Score 38+ out of 50
  • Main Character (bottom 15%): Below 18 — highly intentional and original
  • NPC scores tend to be higher in younger adults (18-24) and decrease with age

Note: Some routine is healthy and efficient. The question is whether you choose your patterns or just fall into them.
