📱TechWhat counts as a red flag?
Red flags are behavioral patterns that signal potential problems in a relationship. A 2023 YouGov survey found the average person has 3-4 dating red flags they're unaware of.
Three categories of red flags
- Communication (items 1-3): Passive aggression, avoidance, and privacy violations
- Boundaries (items 4-7): Clinginess, threats, comparison, and inability to set limits
- Patterns (items 8-10): Returning to toxic exes, ignoring deal-breakers, and love-bombing
Population norms
- Average score: 24/50 — everyone has some relationship blind spots
- Many red flags (top 15%): Score 36+ out of 50
- Green flag (bottom 15%): Below 14 — emotionally mature and self-aware
- Women score slightly higher on communication items; men on boundary items
Note: Having red flags doesn't make you a bad person — it makes you human. Awareness is the first step to growth.
