What are trust issues?

Trust issues are persistent patterns of suspicion, guardedness, and difficulty relying on others. A 2022 Pew Research study found only 30% of adults say they fully trust their romantic partner, and trust in institutions has hit historic lows.

Three dimensions of trust issues

  • Suspicion (items 1-3): Assuming bad intentions, surveillance behaviors, and loyalty tests
  • Vulnerability (items 4-7): Emotional walls, independence as defense, and fear of dependence
  • Attachment (items 8-10): Anxious attachment, abandonment fear, and trauma carryover

Population norms

  • Average score: 26/50 — moderate guardedness is common
  • Severe trust issues (top 15%): Score 38+ out of 50
  • Open book (bottom 15%): Below 15 — high baseline trust
  • People with avoidant attachment score highest on vulnerability items
  • People with anxious attachment score highest on attachment items
  • Trust issues increase significantly after betrayal experiences

Note: Some healthy skepticism protects you. Issues arise when trust patterns sabotage connection.
